6 Travel Tips for Students

Hello, my dear friends. It is that time of the year again when most of us are finalizing our summer schedules. It is likely that you will be traveling over the summer, probably with friends and family or for an exciting new internship, perhaps? Well, whatever your plans may be, here are some handy tips that can help you travel smarter and better.

  1. Check your luggage allowances

Now this may seem obvious to those of us who are traveling by plane. But what I’m talking about here is that pesky in between travel from wherever you are to the airport. A lot of you living in college towns often have to use public transport like buses and trains. Now you might want to check the amount of luggage that these services such as Megabus, Greyhound, Amtrak etc.  will allow you to carry. It is also important to make sure of the exact dimensions of the luggage i.e. height, width and length that will be allowed. Do not assume that buses and trains and planes have the same luggage allowances because they often do not due to space restrictions.

  1. Carry  cash

Now this is quite an obvious one. While it is convenient to conduct all transactions through cash, you might want to have a hundred dollars or so in small change of ones, fives and tens. These can come in pretty handy when ordering food and for emergency purposes during the journey. It is also smart to make sure that you keep this money and your card in separate locations in case you lose one or the other.

  1. Stock up on your hygiene supplies

Now this is more oriented towards those of us who have experienced the horrors of public travel.  It is also relevant to those of us who are traveling over long distances, cross country or even to a different country. These supplies will make sure you look your best at the end of your journey as well as protect you during the unsanitary conditions of your travel.

These are some of my recommendations for your hygiene kit:

  • Wet Wipes
  • Paper Soap
  • Tissues
  • Small hand towel
  • Mini pack of toothbrush and toothpaste
  • A small tube of moisturizer
  • Vaseline
  1. Check your meds

Some people have health conditions that require them to take daily medication. In this case, it is better to talk to your doctor before traveling and  stock up on enough medicine for the duration of your travel. Sometimes some meds are not available at certain pharmacies due to a shortage in supplies and other time refilling scripts can be a hassle due to jurisdiction problems. When traveling to a different country, make this a priority in your checklist as medications across countries might differ significantly.

  1. Check your electronics

When traveling to a different country, it is important to carry a multi-port adapter that will help you charge devices. It is also a good idea to leave house with a fully charged travel charger for on-the-go connectivity to your loved ones. 

  1. Research your phone options for international travel.

This is something that I have personally experienced and it can become a huge hassle. When you are traveling internationally, it is a good idea to research ahead into the connectivity options. For an example, when I first traveled to the US, I realized that the H2O Sim card I had bought on my sister’s advice did not work on my phone. It thus became a hassle for me and I had to borrow a phone off of someone else. It is thus prudent to get online and research into your options, especially if you have a contract with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and the like.

Also, some countries do not have a contract system and so you might need to buy a Sim card and a small phone locally. If your phone is unlocked already, you should check with fellow travelers’ experiences to know your options.

A College Student’s Top 5 Ways To Wake Up In The Morning Without A Coffee

 “If you get enough sleep, you won’t have trouble getting up”. Easier said than done right? Waking up to that annoying ringing noise telling     you to get up from your cozy bed and head to that 8AM class can be the one of the worst things. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are some suggestions to give you that extra push in the morning.

  1. Download the Wake n Shake app

    This free app is just like an alarm-clock but with a catch: you have to shake your device aggressively to turn off the sound. This is a great way to not move like a slug out of bed and into your day. Some people may hate this method, while others love it. I personally use the app and I’m not exaggerating when I say you have to really shake it to disable it.

  2. Open the windows

    When you get up in the morning there is nothing that wakes you up quite like natural light. This natural way to alert yourself in the morning shifts your body from sleep mode to wake-up mode. Since I leave my house within 20 minutes of getting up, I immediately feel a change in alertness when I walk outside for a few minutes. If your schedule allows so, try going on a morning walk or sit on the porch for a couple of minutes before beginning your day.

  3. Put your phone across the room

    This is another technique that makes you put an effort into getting up. If the alarm is in arm’s reach, you are more likely to hit that snooze button. I know it’s hard to wake up and not reach for your alarm clock or your phone. But, it forces you to get up and move.

  4. Call your mom

    Yeah this sounds like a strange one, but it helps! Remember who used to wake you up in grade school? Who wouldn’t let you hit that invisible snooze button? Mom. Talking to someone you’re close to can charge you up and it is said that talking to your mom is stress-relieving.

    5.Create a “Jazz-you-up” playlist

    If you haven’t already done so, select 5-6 songs that you can sing along with in your head or out loud. In addition to this, try to only listen to this playlist when you get up. You could look forward to waking up just to listen to this playlist!
